Fertilizing the Lawn
Our summer fertilization is a combination of a blend of slow release nitrogen. While there are fertilizer blends available at nursery and garden centers, the majority of people are over feeding or not feeding their lawn with the right mixture. The experts at Centennial Property Maintenance creates custom feeding for every lawn. No two lawns are alike!
Natural organic and other predominately slowly available nitrogen fertilizers work well when applied in the summer. Once applied, we set your watering schedule so that it can be watered in as soon as possible after application. Additionally, when we mow, rather than removing the grass clippings, mulching the grass clippings provides a substantial fertilizer benefit.
Aerating the Lawn
Centennial Property Maintenance uses a specific schedule to manage the lawn care maintenance to ensure the proper service is performed at the right time. For example, lawn aeration should not be performed when temperatures are expected to exceed 85 degrees. High temperatures, with likely watering restrictions may cause lawns to be too hard to allow for effective aeration. Aeration should be scheduled in the fall, when over seeding lawns. Fall lawn aeration is important for controlling thatch, an organic layer that often impedes proper water movement into the soil. So, in short, fall lawn aeration, fertilization, and over seeding all can be done at the same time.
Aerating at least once a year will keep your lawn thick, healthy and green. Core aeration helps by punching holes in compacted soil and thatch. The machine then pulls out a core and deposits it on the surface of the lawn. The open “holes” or “cores” allows water and air to move deeper into the soil so the roots can grow deeper. When roots grow deeper, the grass grows taller and thicker.
Mowing the Lawn
Did you know that setting the mowing height at 2 ½ to 3 inches, and mowing grass the same height during growing season creates a drought tolerant lawn? Well, it does! Another reason you should let the professionals work for you for Fox Ridge Lawn Care Landscape Maintenance. There are 4 key factors for proper mowing:
- Choosing the correct mowing height to maintain a healthy lawn.
- Recycle grass clippings into the lawn.
- Use a sharp blade to reduce tearing of the grass leaves.
- Mow during the cooler time of day to avoid causing stress to the lawn.
Weed Control in the Lawn
Drought-stressed lawns are susceptible to weeds, including: dandelion, bindweed, spurge, mallow, crabgrass, and foxtail. Weeds are more common on those areas of the lawn where irrigation coverage is less than optimal. Another reason why you need Centennial Property Maintenance to manage your lawn care and landscaping. Drought-stressed weeds can be difficult to kill with summer herbicide applications.
Weed control is much more effective with fall treatments. They should be green and growing and spot-treated. Often times we see folks add weed control at the wrong time of year and it ends up burning the grass. Herbicides should not be applied when temperatures exceed 85-90 degrees.
Watering the Lawn
As soon as the weather warms up, our lawns and landscape plants will use more water. Watering twice a week may be sufficient to maintain green turf during the March-June period, but a return to normal summer temperatures and precipitation will cause moderate to severe lawn stress – especially under the restrictive watering.
Effective lawn irrigation requires an understanding of how the irrigation system operates, as well as ongoing maintenance of sprinkler heads. Since the soil can only hold several days of moisture, it’s important to be proactive about turning on your sprinklers. Our landscape management professionals will set your system so that irrigation occurs between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. (or as otherwise mandated), repair or replace any broken irrigation heads, and adjust irrigation heads to target your lawn accordingly. Water tips to keep in mind over the summer months.
- Follow watering programs encouraged by your community.
- Water the lawn whenever it is allowed.
- Contact your local water utility for information on your local watering restrictions.
